UPMSP Class 12 Chemistry Syllabus
For students in Class 12, the Board of Intermediate Education of Uttar Pradesh has established a new curriculum. The new 2020–2021 syllabus, based on NCERT, has been created or modified to help students improve their knowledge of science topics, particularly Chemistry. To help students become aware of and comprehend the concepts more clearly and from the perspective of real-world application, each unit and the topics covered in the various chapters have been put together.

UPMSP Class 12 Chemistry Syllabus- unit-wise
Due to the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on regular teaching and learning in schools associated with the UP Board for the 2020–2021 academic year, the subject experts committee has proposed that the curriculum be reduced by 30% in the following ways:
Unit 1: Solid State (05 marks)
Solids are categorised according to their many binding forces, including metallic, ionic, covalent, and molecular solids and amorphous and crystalline solids (elementary idea). Unit cells in two- and three-dimensional lattices, estimation of unit cell density, packing in solids, packing effectiveness, voids, a number of atoms per unit cell in a cubic unit cell and point defects are some topics covered.
Unit 2: Solution (07 marks)
Types of solutions, expression of the concentration of solid-in-liquid solutions, solubility of gases in liquids, solid solutions, Raoult’s law, colligative properties—relatively lower vapour pressures, higher boiling points, lower freezing points, higher osmotic pressures, and the use of colligative properties to determine molecular masses.
Unit 3: Electrochemistry (05 marks)
Redox reactions, a cell’s EMF, the potential of a typical electrode, the Nernst equation and how it applies to chemical cells, Conductance in electrolytic solutions, specific and molar conductivity, variations of conductivity with concentration, Kohlrausch’s Law and electrolysis, all have a relationship to the Gibbs energy change and the EMF of a cell.
Unit 4: Chemical Kinetics (05 marks)
Average and instantaneous reaction rates, the concentration, temperature, catalyst, order and molecularity of the reaction, the rate law and specific rate constant, integrated rate equations and half-life (only for zero and first-order reactions).\
Unit 5: Surface Chemistry(05 marks)
Adsorption ‐ physisorption and chemisorption, factors affecting adsorption of gases on solids, colloidal state: the distinction between true solutions, colloids and suspension; lyophilic, lyophobic, multi‐molecular and macromolecular colloids; properties of colloids; Tyndall effect, Brownian movement, electrophoresis, coagulation.
Unit 6: p-block elements (07 marks)
Group 15 elements: Introduction in general, electronic configuration, occurrence, oxidation states and developments in physical and chemical qualities; Nitrogen preparation properties and uses; compounds of Nitrogen: preparation and properties of Ammonia and Nitric Acid.
Group 16 elements: Introduction in general, electronic configuration, oxidation states, occurrence, trends in physical and chemical properties, dioxygen preparation, properties, and uses, classification of oxides, ozone, sulphur (allotropic forms), compounds of sulphur (sulphur dioxide preparation, properties, and uses), and sulphur oxyacids (Structures only).
Group 17 elements: Introduction in general, oxidation states, electronic configuration, occurrence, trends in physical and chemical properties, compounds of halogens, Chlorine and hydrochloric acid preparation, characteristics, and applications, interhalogen compounds and halogen oxyacids (structures only).
Group 18 elements: Introduction in general, electronic configuration, occurrence, physical and chemical property trends and applications.
Unit 7: d and f block elements (04 marks)
Introduction in general, electronic configuration, occurrence and properties of transition metals, general trends in the first-row transition metals’ properties, including metallic character, ionisation enthalpy, oxidation states, ionic radii, colour, catalytic property, magnetic properties, interstitial compounds and alloy formation.
Lanthanide: Lanthanide contraction and its effects, as well as electronic configuration and oxidation states.
Unit 8: Coordination compounds (06 marks)
Introduction to coordination compounds, ligands, number of coordinated atoms, colour, magnetic characteristics and forms, as well as the IUPAC nomenclature for mononuclear coordination compounds. Werner’s theory, CFT, VBT and bonding.
Unit 9: Haloalkanes and haloarenes (05 marks)
Haloalkanes: Nomenclature, C-X bond type, physical and chemical characteristics and optical rotation mechanism of substitution processes are all discussed in relation to haloalkanes.
Haloarenes: C-X bond nature, substitution processes (Directive influence of halogen in monosubstituted compounds only).
Unit 10: Alcohols, phenols and ethers (05 marks)
Alcohols: nomenclature, preparation techniques, physical and chemical characteristics (only for primary alcohols), classification of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols, and dehydration mechanism.
Phenols: nomenclature, synthesis techniques, physical and chemical characteristics, the acidity of phenol, electrophilic substitution processes and applications.
Ethers: nomenclature, preparation techniques, chemical and physical characteristics, applications.
Unit 11: Aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids (06 marks)
Aldehydes and ketones: nomenclature, carbonyl group nature, synthesis techniques, physical and chemical characteristics, mechanism of nucleophilic addition, alpha hydrogen reactivity in aldehydes, applications.
Nomenclature, acidic nature, preparation techniques, physical and chemical characteristics and applications of carboxylic acids.
Unit 12: Amines (organic compounds containing nitrogen) (04 marks)
Amines: nomenclature, categorisation, structure, preparation techniques, physical and chemical characteristics, applications, and recognition of primary, secondary and tertiary amines.
Unit 13: Biomolecules (06 marks)
Polysaccharides (starch, cellulose, glycogen), oligosaccharides (sucrose, lactose, and maltose) and the significance of carbohydrates. Classification and uses of vitamins. Enzymes. Hormones: Elementary idea excluding structure.

Preparation tips for UPMSP Class 12 Chemistry Syllabus
- Read through all the topics included in the 2019–2020 UP Board Chemistry curriculum for class 12.
