Compeering
Read compeering script which presents the back- ground, highlights of the events, contains reviews / re- flections relevant to the context and uses polite and entertain- ing expressions.
Report
Read reports that contain rel- evant ideas, concepts and in- formation, interpret data, draw inference, include personal reflections on the topic, se- quence ideas, have coherence and use indexing, referencing and quoting.
News report
Read news reports that contain appropriate headline, lead sen- tence, body and have organisation, cohesive devices and coherence and make use of reporting style and reveal the point of view of the newspa- per.
Review
Read and respond to reviews that state the context, highlight and comment on features of the item reviewed, cite from the texts, make personal impres- sions and maintain coherence.
Speech
Read and respond to the speeches that contain organisation of ideas, , argu- mentative / persuasive / inter- active language, discourse markers, cite examples and quotations and has coherence.
Biography
Read biographical sketches that contain the details of the person, anecdotes, events, achievements, and the writer’s reflections, thoughts and feel- ings, have organisation, co- herence and flow and con- tain tone, voice and point of view of the writer.
3. Conventions of Writing
- Start a sentence with a capital letter and end it with a period.
- Capitalize all proper nouns, greetings, months and days of the week.
- Use full stop, comma, question mark, exclamatory marks, apostrophe and abbre- viations.
- Give space between words and sentences.
- Write correct spelling.
- Follow the lay out con- ventions of various discourse genres such as conversations, description, narrative, notice, message, poster, slogans, diary, letter, drama, essay, etc.
4. Vocabulary
- Use appropriate words for expressing oneself using a variety of discourses and cre- ate new collocations.
- Use nouns and verbs interchangeably for expressing oneself.
- Coin new words appro- priate to the context.
- Distinguish between class changing and class-main- taining affixes and derive a different category of word by changing the prefix or suffix of a certain word.
- Maintain a personal dictionary. Look up unfamiliar words in a dictionary.
- Use knowledge of in- dividual words in unknown compound words to predict their meaning.
- Develop vocabulary through reading (e.g., bilin- gual texts, reading cards, en- vironmental print) and through using it in spoken and written discourses.
- Understand and explain frequently used synonyms, ant- onyms, collocations, homo- phones and homographs.
- Understand and ex- plain “shades of meaning” in related words.
- Identify and interpret figurative language and words with multiple meanings.
- Monitor expository text for unknown words or words with novel meanings by using word, sentence, and paragraph clues to determine meaning.
- Apply knowledge of word origins, derivations, compound words and idioms to determine the meaning of words and phrases.
