Q.3 What changes do you find in the army at this time?
Ans-
(i) Kings of this time maintained a well-organised army, with elephants, chariots, cavalry and foot soldiers.
(ii) There were military leaders known as samanthas. They provided the king with troops whenever he needed them.
(iii) The samanthas were not paid regular salaries; some of them received grants of land.
(iv) They collected revenue from the land and used this to maintain soldiers and horses, and weapons for war.
(v) Whenever the ruler was weak, samantas tried to become independent, using the power of their well-equipped army.
Q.4 What were the new administrative arrangements during this period?
Ans-
(i) Village was the basic unit of administration. Some important administrative posts were now hereditary; sons succeeded fathers to these posts. For example, the poet Harishena was a maha-danda-nayaka (chief judicial officer), like his father.
(ii) Sometimes, one person held many offices. For instance, besides being a maha-danda-nayaka, Harishena was a kumar-amatya(meaning an important minister), and a sandhi-vigrahika(a minister of war and peace).
(iii) Besides, important men probably had power over local administration. These included the nagarashreshthi(chief banker or merchant of the city), the sarthavaha (leader of the merchant caravans), the prathama-kulika (the chief craftsman), and the head of the kayasthas (scribes).

Ans-
He would have to march solemnly in splendid robes, to twirl his moustaches and wield the silver-paper wrapped sword with gusto. He also would have to sit and play the veena and recite poetry.

No. The ordinary people would not have understood the Prashastis because these were written in Sanskrit, the language of the Brahmins and the kings, while the ordinary women and men spoke Prakrit.
