1.1 Food Variety – This section emphasizes the need for students to learn about food, and its varieties available in varied regions of India. Students will also be able to understand how the food is prepared, what ingredients are needed, and where they come from.
1.2 Food Materials and Sources – Class 6 Science Chapter 1 Food: Where does it come from? The students learn about the various sources of food which they eat.. They also get to know about various kinds of foods like plants, milk, fruits, vegetables, meat from domestic animals, rice, wheat, other cereals, grains, pulses, etc. This section of the chapter further explains an activity to make students understand what are the sources of food and where we get them from.
1.3 Plant Parts and Animal Products As Food – This section discusses the parts of a plant and how every part of the plant is a food material to human beings. The example includes leafy vegetables, edible oils from the seeds and flowers, vegetables from roots, and direct vegetables grown from the plants and seeds of plants that are consumed as sprouts. Similarly, the milk we get from animals is utilised by mankind in many ways.
1.4 Activity on Plant Parts as Food – This section has several activities to make students understand all concepts in the chapter and the food store. They are asked to prepare a list of food items along with the part of the plant to which they belong to.
1.5 What do Animals Eat? – NCERT Science Class 6 Chapter 1 also discusses animals along with their food habits and how some animals eat only grass and leaves, omnivorous eat both grass and meat, and carnivores eat only flesh and meat. Students will learn about the categories of animals based on their food habits in this section.
