Question 1
The 1st question from NCERT Solutions for Class 5 Maths Chapter 6 deals with a cat chasing a mouse on a staircase. The staircase has different steps. The cat is currently on the 3rd step and can jump 3 steps at a time. The mouse is on the 14th step and can jump only 2 steps at a time. If the mouse reaches step 28, he will be safe. Will the cat be able to catch the mouse?
Solution
As given, the cat is currently on the 3rd step and can jump 3 steps at a time. The mouse is currently on the 14th step and can jump 2 steps at a time.
The steps on which the cat and the mouse will jump include:
Cat jumps on steps: 3 (starting point), 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27
Mouse jumps on steps: 14 (starting point), 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28
Now, check if there are any steps which are common to both the cat and the mouse. If there is a common step before step 28, the cat will be able to catch the mouse. Otherwise, the mouse will escape.
Turns out that they both meet at step 24, which means the cat will be able to catch the mouse.
