The following are the key topics covered in NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 20
Daughter of the Jungle
Every Sunday, Suryamani takes the kids to the forest. The kids sing and dance in Kuduk while they’re walking. They learn about many forest trees from Suryamani. She regards learning to read the forest as being equally essential to learning to read books. Their lives are intertwined with the forests.
Growing Up
Since she was a young child, Suryamani was very fond of and affectionate towards the forest. He would choose the route through the forest rather than the direct road, even while she was travelling to school. Her family used to go into the forest and gather herbs and leaves to sell at the market. Her mother used to make plates out of crumpled leaves and weave bamboo into baskets. Suryamnai’s chacha (uncle) worked very hard to secure her admission to the Bishanpur school.
Suryamani’s Journey
- With the help of a scholarship, Suryamani finished her education after putting in a lot of effort.
- In her village, she was the first female to do so.
- After meeting journalist Vasavi didi, Suryamani joined her to work for the Jharkhand Jungle Bachao Andolan (Movement to Save the Forests of Jharkhand).
- Bijoy and Mirchi, two of Suryamani’s friends, supported her on her journey.
- She wanted her people to be proud to be Adivasis and had a dream for the Kuduk community.
Suryamani’s Torang
With the support of Vasavi and others, Suryamani launched her Torang centre when she was 21 years old. In the Kuduk language, torang is the word for the jungle.
She taught young people various topics, including how to gather herbs and leaves, sing in their native tongue, and work with bamboo. These all took place in the Torang centre. The centre was filled with various unique books and a variety of instruments, including flutes and drums.
When people feared that their land would be taken from them or that something unfair had happened, they would turn to Suryamani.
After getting married, Suryamani and Bijoy now work on this venture.
Lottery for Farming in Mizoram
People would hold a lottery in the Mizoram hills to determine which family would receive how much land for farming. They rotate, taking turns farming because the land belongs to the entire town and not just to each individual.
In the lottery, Saima Sir’s family was given the first option. He requested “three tin” of land for farming.
One tin of land is the area that can be used to grow one tin of seeds.
Jhoom Farming
- After cutting one crop in Jhoom farming, the land is left alone for a while. There is no agriculture.
- The weeds and bamboo that grow there are left unattended.
- They are sliced and set on fire. The ash improves the soil’s fertility.
- Instead of ploughing, the ground is only lightly excavated when it is ready for farming.
- On it, seeds are then scattered.
- A single farm can be used to raise various crops, including rice, vegetables, chiles, and maize.
- Additionally, weeds and other undesirable plants are clipped rather than taken out so the earth can digest them.
- Additionally, this increases the soil’s fertility.
