The chapter No Place for Us is about a boy named Jatreya. He lived in a small village known as Khedi, and his family consisted of three members: his father, his mother, and Jatreya himself. But for Jatreya, the entire village was like his family. There was peace in Khedi village. Kids in that village learned to play dhol, dance and play the flute, make vessels and other items from bamboo sticks and clay, and recognize birds and imitate their soothing sounds. The story takes place in a typical village setting, and our NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 18 has depicted the narrative with a lot of visual imagery to make learning more interesting for kids.
One day, everyone got to know that a massive dam was supposed to be built on the river in the village. The land and forest were connected to the adoring memories of many generations. Their grandparents had been living on that land for a very long time. They all were made to vacate the place by government officials and the police without their wishes.
Jatreya moved to a new village known as Sindhuri. Jatreya’s parents had been so sad about leaving Khedi that they were almost dead before they moved there. In Sindhuri, there were only 8 to 10 families he could call his own. It was never the new village Jatreya had dreamt about. Electricity was available only for a day, and there was a water problem. The plight and the hardships faced by Jatreya’s family have been explained in more detail in our NCERT Solutions for Class 5 EVS Chapter 18.
The teachers did not pay much attention to the children in the Sindhuri village, and people in Sindhuri treated them like unwanted guests. After a couple of years, Jatreya sold his animals and land and moved to a big city Mumbai. Things were not easy for him in Mumbai, too, as the expenses were high, and he had fewer savings. His relatives suggested that Jatreya need not repair his one-room as he was unsure of permanently staying back in Mumbai. He was always worried, thinking about his future.
Nowadays, many people decide to shift and have a good life when they move to a bigger city. Job opportunities are the most common reason why people relocate. Besides this, lack of opportunities, better education, construction of dams, globalisation, natural disaster (flood and drought) and sometimes crop failure force villagers to relocate to cities.
