The first section of this Chapter explains the Class party. The school reopened after the vacation, and the children returned to school. The kids decided to have a party, bring food from their home, and share it. The second part of the lesson explains the Bihu festival and how it is celebrated in Sonmani’s Locality. Bihu is the reaping festival celebrated in Assam. They treat people with different types of sweets and food. Sonmani and her neighbours celebrated Bihu together.
All neighbours contributed money for the treat. They shared the work and made Bhela Ghar with the help of grass and bamboo; this is a tradition during the festival. It is a bonfire. They will be eating Cheva rice and Bora rice, which is the speciality during the season of harvesting. Some go to the market to purchase meat, fish, and vegetables, and few are busy making a sweet dish known as pitha.
In the evening, they wear their Assamese dress and mekhala chador, traditional. They played, danced, sang, and played the drums around the bonfire. The treat is served on the banana leaf. All sit together and have their food. It is fun in the evening at Sonmani’s village.
