This is the story about Vaishali and her family. Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 15 have depicted this story in an engaging way. Vaishali’s father is a vegetable seller. Vaishali narrates the activities of her family that take place during the day. Vaishali says that their day starts at 3 am in the morning for her entire family, including her mother and her two brothers.
Vaishali’s younger brother Chotu helps his father in his work. The work would start by sorting out the previous day’s vegetables that were left in the gunny bags and baskets. They used to remove the old vegetables and fruits in order to buy the fresh ones.
After sorting vegetables, they had their morning tea, and her father would leave for the market to buy some fresh vegetables. When Vaishali’s father started his day, Vaishali, along with her brother chotu and her mother, kept back the previous day’s vegetables and fruits in the gunny bag and sprinkled some water on them to prevent them from drying. This part of the story is important to understand, and in our Extramarks NCERT Solutions for Class 4 EVS Chapter 15, we have used a few colourful diagrams to explain this better.
By 6:30 am, Vaishali’s father would be back from the market with fresh vegetables. Vaishali says, during that time, her home looked like a small vegetable market. There were different types of vegetables, and they had to quickly arrange them.
They kept aside those vegetables that were not fully ripe as they could not be sold in the market. As soon as they finished arranging these vegetables, their father sorted them on the hand-pulled cart and left for the market. Their father had to reach the market as early as possible so that his regular customers did not go to the other vegetable seller to buy vegetables.
Vaishali’s elder brother would also leave for school immediately after her father would leave for the market. Chotu attended afternoon school, so he rested for a while and then went to the market to help his father before his school hours. Vaishali’s elder brother would go to the market to help their father after his school hours. They both used to reach home very late at night. By then, Vaishali and Chotu would be sleeping. Everyone else would go to sleep by 11 o’clock at night to wake up at 3 o’clock the next morning.
In this Chapter, we have learnt that Vaishali and her family kept sprinkling water on the vegetables to keep them fresh. So how do vegetables remain fresh for a longer time? Fruits and vegetables both are perishable. It means they get rottenvery soon. Few vegetables like onions, potatoes, ginger, and garlic can remain fresh for a long time. Fruits and vegetables like bananas, spinach, tomatoes, etc., need to be eaten soon; otherwise, they get spoiled.
