NCERT Solutions for Class 12 English Chapters

Chapter 1 – The Third Level
Written by Jack Finney, this story centres on war and modernity. The story brings out the two themes by revolving around Charley, a 31-year old man, who somehow managed to reach the third level of the Grand Central station only to find out that there were only two levels.
Chapter 2 – The Tiger King
This story, which revolves around the King of Pratibandapuram, is written by Ramaswamy Aiyer Krishnamurthy. The king ended up killing all tigers, except for one, because an astrologer had predicted that a tiger would be the cause of the king’s demise. Ultimately, the king died from an infection due to a splinter from a wooden tiger.
Chapter 3 – Journey to the End of the Earth
Based upon the dilemma faced by a Japanese doctor and his wife on encountering an injured American soldier, this story was written by Pearl S. Buck.
Chapter 4 – The Enemy
This chapter is not fiction or biography. It is the recollection of the author, Tishani Joshi’s trip to the famous yet unexplored Antarctica.
Chapter 5 – Should Wizard Hit Mommy
Written by John Updike, this chapter revolves around the lives of a man named Jack and his daughters.
Chapter 6 – On the Face of It
This chapter speaks about the story of a teenage boy called Derry as well as an elderly man with a burnt face who goes by the name of Mr. Lamb. The chapter is written by Susan Hill.
Chapter 7 – Evans Tries as an O-Level
In this chapter, author, Normal Colin Dexter, talks about a man named Evan who is an infamous prisoner and has escaped from prison multiple times.
Chapter 8 – Memories of Childhood
This chapter is further divided into two autobiographical stories written by Bama and Zitkala-Sa respectively.

Chapter 1: The Last Lesson
This story is about a French boy Franz and is set during the time when Lorraine and Alsace were in France and not Germany. The Berlin authorities had asked schools to teach German to students instead of French. Franz never liked studying, and the last lecture he attended talked about patriotism, nostalgia and the French language.
Chapter 2: Lost Spring
The chapter has many real-life stories about underprivileged children. The writer interacted with these children to find out more about their dreams and the reality of their life.
Chapter 3: Deep Water
Deep Water is an excerpt from the autobiography of an author who also wrote ‘Of Men and Mountains’. The story revolves around how the author overcame the fear of water through strong will power.
Chapter 4: The Rattrap
Rattrap is a story about a destitute rattrap seller who begged and stole to make a living.
Chapter 5: Indigo
The Indigo chapter is based on the interview that Louis Fischer did with Mahatma Gandhi. The beginning of the Indigo movement and struggles to make it work are discussed in the chapter.
Chapter 6: Poets and Pancakes
The chapter is an extract from ‘My Years with the Boss’. The chapter is about the experiences the author had during the tenure in Gemino Studios.
Chapter 7: The Interview
The chapter is an excerpt from the interview between Mukund and Umberto Eco. While Mukund is a reporter from the newspaper The Hindu, Umberto Eco is a professor at the University of Bologna.
Chapter 8: Going Places
The chapter is about the imagination of a teenage girl Sophie. She worked in a biscuit factory and dreamt of meeting the famous footballer Danny Casey.

Chapter 1: My Mother at Sixty-Six
The poem is focused on Kamala Das, who is a poet and her relationship with her mother. Kamala realises that her mother is old and sympathises with her condition.
Chapter 2: An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum
The poem is composed by Stephen Spender. It is about a class for elementary school in a slum. The poem is a request that children from slums should go out and experience the world.
Chapter 3: Keeping Quiet
Written by Pablo Neruda, the poem conveys the importance of peace and silence. It tells how silence can help people look back at their actions and introspect.
Chapter 4: A Thing of Beauty
A beautiful composition by John Keats, A Thing of Beauty talks about things that bring us eternal joy. A comparison is done between a shelter and all those beautiful things that bring us rejuvenation and tranquillity.
Chapter 5: A Roadside Stand
This poem by Robert Frost, talks about the lives of the roadside stand owners who spend their day selling products to improve their conditions.
Chapter 6: Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers
A poem by Adrienne Rich, where she talks about the desires of her Aunt Jennifer. The poet talks about how her aunt wants freedom from her husband’s dominance, but doesn’t have the courage to do so.
Marks Distribution for Class 12 English Chapters
Of the Class 12 English question paper, Section C consists of questions taken from Literature chapters. This section has a total of 40 marks. As for Sections A and B, they together carry a total of 60 marks. Both short and long-form questions are asked and the NCERT solutions for Class 12 English also follow the same pattern and marks distribution.
