- New Kings and Kingdoms
This chapter informs you about the new kingdoms that emerged at that time and how the kings ran their realms and managed revenue and taxes. You learn about Rashtrakutas, Nagabhata’s achievements, and how irrigation developed in Tamil Nadu. This chapter also educates you about the Chola empire, its rise, temples, categorisation of lands, etc.
- The Delhi Sultans
This chapter begins with the foundation of the Delhi Sultanate in 1206 and covers significant developments as they ruled parts of the Indian subcontinent for 320 years. You learn about the Slave dynasty, Khilji dynasty, Tughlaq dynasty, Sayyid dynasty, and Lodi dynasty, and the contribution of the sultanate to the architecture, fine arts, monuments, paintings, etc., of the country.
- The Mughal Empire
In this chapter, you learn about the Mughal empire, from the Mughal leaders – Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb – to their military campaigns, their relation with other rulers, Akbar’s policies, etc. You also come across terms like Mansabdars, Jagirdars, Zabt, Zamindars, Akbar Nama, and more.
- Rulers and Buildings
This chapter introduces you to the magnificent buildings and structures of various rulers before the eighteenth century. You learn about the engineering skills of the people of that time; you also learn about multiple temples, mosques, tanks, gardens, forts, tombs, churches, etc., built during that time.
- Towns, Traders and Craftspersons
You learn about temples, especially those of the 11th century, and how and when they were built. This chapter informs you about the development of small towns, their networks, how taxes were imposed, the identification of big and small traders, craftspersons and their contribution to society. You also learn about cities and towns like Hampi, Surat, and Masulipatnam, which have great historical significance.
- Tribes, Nomads and the Settled Communities
This chapter discusses tribal people, their settlements, nomads, mobile people, etc. You get an idea of how the administration was carried out in tribal settlements. You learn about the Banjaras, how new castes and hierarchies got introduced in the society, the Gonds, the Ahoms, how the tribes slowly merged with the caste-based societies, etc.
- Devotional Paths to the Divine
This chapter discusses the Bhakti and Sufi movements that have transpired since the 18th century, the idea of the supreme god, Nayanars, Alvars, etc. You get introduced to various philosophers like Shankara, Basavanna, Ramanuja, the saints of Maharashtra, saint Kabir, Baba Guru Nayak, etc.
- The Making of Regional Cultures
In this chapter, you understand how regional cultures gain significance. You learn about the development of Malayalam, the establishment of the Chera kingdom, the Jagannatha Cult, the Rajputs and their heroism, etc. You are introduced to concepts of classical dance forms like Kathak and the tradition of miniature paintings. This chapter also closely examines Bengal, its language, pirs, temples, and their liking for fish as food.
- Eighteenth-Century Political Formations
This chapter deals with the rise of various political groups from when Aurangzeb died in 1707 to 1761 when the third battle of Panipat took place. You learn about the emergence of new states like Awadh, Bengal, and Hyderabad, the watan jagirs of the Rajputs, the fight for independence by the Sikhs, the Jats, the Marathas, etc.
