1. Nutrition in Plants

This chapter discusses how plants make food using raw materials available in their surroundings, like water, carbon dioxide, sunlight, and minerals. You will find concepts like autotrophs and heterotrophs and the difference. Moving ahead, the chapter discusses the photosynthesis process in detail with enough supporting diagrams to make your understanding easy. You also learn about other plant nutrition modes, parasite Cuscuta, plants that eat animals, saprotrophs, etc. 

2. Nutrition in Animals

Chapter 2 begins by discussing how animals consume food. While some birds prefer sucking nectar, snakes swallow their prey, and humans chew and swallow their food. But how do human beings digest food? You find the detailed answer in this section. From the mouth and buccal cavity to the oesophagus, stomach, and intestines – you get to learn about their role in digestion in this chapter. You will also learn about ruminants and amoeba and how they eat food and absorb nutrition. 

3. Fibre to fabric

This chapter deals with fibres and types of fibres and talks in detail about wool and silk. Have you ever thought about the intricate process involved in getting wool from sheep and silk from silkworms? Well, you will get to know them now. From shearing and scouring the hair of the sheep to dying the fleece and rolling them into yarns and from rearing silkworms to processing the silk, you will learn everything here. 

4. Heat

As the name suggests, you will learn about heat, the concepts of hot and cold and their varying degrees. By now, you may have seen or used a thermometer; now, it’s time to know more about it and laboratory thermometers. 

5. Acids, Bases and Salts

This chapter starts with distinguishing between acids and bases while giving examples of edible acidic and alkaline items like lemon, curd, vinegar, etc. It then shifts to the natural indicators that change colours and help us identify the acids and bases and the term ‘neutral’. This chapter also contains an elaborate explanation of the neutralisation process while taking help from daily life activities. 

6. Physical and Chemical changes

This chapter is segregated into four sections for easy understanding of various concepts. In the first section, you learn about physical changes with the help of five activities that include physical experiments. You know about the concepts of physical properties and physical changes. The following section deals with chemical changes, again with various experiments. Then the focus shifts to rusting or iron and crystallisation. You also get to learn some  Formulas. 

7. Weather, Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate

This chapter deals with the climate and weather of various places and how living beings adapt to them. You learn the fundamental difference between weather and climate and then study in detail the impact of climate on living beings – plants, animals, and humans. You also get an idea about the polar region and the tropical rainforest and how plants and animals adapt themselves to the extreme climatic conditions of these regions. 

8. Winds, Storms and Cyclones

Do you know the difference between winds, storms, and cyclones? How are they formed, and why do they differ in intensity? You get all your answers in this chapter. You learn concepts like air exerts pressure, reduced air pressure accompanying high-speed winds, expansion of air on heating and how wind currents are generated. Then there is a detailed sub-section about thunderstorms and cyclones that explains how a thunderstorm becomes a storm. You also learn about the destructive powers of cyclones, the safety measures that can help and how advanced technology has been aiding the world to be prepared and safe. 

9. Soil

Soil is a precious natural resource and forms a dynamic and complex ecosystem. This chapter begins with plants and animals’ relation with the soil and then shifts to soil profiling. Do you know how many types of soil there are? You will get an idea here. There are also subsections dealing with concepts like soil texture, soil structure, soil porosity, soil colour, moisture in the soil, water absorption by soil, soil erosion, etc. 

10. Respiration in Organisms

You learn about the reasons behind respiration, concepts like cell respiration and anaerobic respiration, and the mechanism of breathing in human beings with the help of diagrams. The breathing mechanism followed by animals and the underwater breathing procedure are also explained. Seven subsections deal with breathing and respiration here. Some of them are why do we respire, breathing, what do we breathe out, do plants also respire, etc.

11. Transportation in Animals and Plants

This chapter discusses the transportation of food, oxygen, and waste materials inside the body. You get to know in detail about the circulatory system, which comprises blood vessels and the heart. You learn about the roles of arteries, veins, plasma, RBCs, WBCs, haemoglobin, and platelets in the human body. After the circulatory system, the excretory system and what forms it in the body are discussed. Thereafter, the focus is on plants, how they transport substances and the transpiration in them.  

12. Reproduction in Plants

This chapter begins with the definition of reproduction and the modes of reproduction in plants – asexual and sexual. You become aware of the several modes of asexual reproduction methods like vegetative propagation, fragmentation, budding, and spore formation. You also learn about the concepts of self-pollination and cross-pollination, how fertilisation takes place in flowers and the ways through which seeds are dispersed. 

13. Motion and Time

As the Class 6 science book has already covered the basics of motion, this chapter deals with the types of motion in detail. You learn several concepts related to motion here like speed, time, their measurement and measuring units, distance, displacement, and how to calculate time and speed. This chapter also contains information about distance-time graphs. 

14. Electric Current and Its Effects

To explain to you better the concept of electric current, this chapter makes you aware of the several symbols of electronic components like electric cells, electric bulbs, batteries, wires, etc. Then it switches to the effects of electric current that include heating and magnetic effects. You also learn about electromagnets and electric bells.  

15. Light

You get to learn about light and its properties in this chapter. Do you know light always travels in a straight line? You learn about light reflection, lateral inversion, spherical mirrors, and the different types of lenses available. This chapter uses several real-life examples, charts, graphs, and pictures to make learning exciting and fun. Also, it encourages you to perform several homemade experiments to learn more about the lenses. 

16. Water – A Precious Resource

Water is one of the most precious and necessary resources, but not all people are fortunate enough to get it adequately. Scarcity of water has plagued at least one-third of the population of the world. So, this chapter starts by informing you about water available for future use. Then, it talks about the various forms of water like solid, liquid, and gaseous. It also stresses groundwater as an essential water source and sheds light on the depletion of the water table, water distribution and management, effects of water scarcity on plants, and finally, how you can minimise the wastage of water. You learn the concepts of infiltration, aquifer, rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, etc., here. 

17. Forests: Our Lifeline

This chapter contains only one subsection – Visit to a forest. The atmosphere inside the forest, the importance of forests, and the drawbacks of deforestation are discussed here. The chapter informs you about the biodiversity present in the woods and how it has been supporting various living organisms. You learn that forests provide raw materials to humans and industries and food for animals, act as wind barriers, maintain temperature, prevent soil erosion, etc. 

18. Wastewater story

This chapter elaborately defines wastewater and talks about the various types of effluents. You learn about contamination, sewage, wastewater treatment plants, on-site sanitation system, sludge, biogas, ways to dispose of excreta safely, ill effects of defecating in the open drain system, etc.
