It explores how people lived then, what their activities were, how they fed themselves, what occupations they practised, what technology they developed, and how their relationship was with each other and with their environment.
The course begins with studying the formation of the first organised civilisation in India, the Harappan civilisation. It further sees the changes in social, economic and political interactions, which gave rise to the expansion of kingdoms into empires. Large empires supported the growth of art, culture, philosophy and religion. These empires saw the birth and rise of ambitious leaders like Chandragupta Maurya, King Ashoka and others. We also learn how stories like Mahabharata and other legendary scriptures describe the society of that time. Follow chapters explore the developments brought about by these empires and their leaders. It also notes the events like war and conquests, along with progress in science, architecture, infrastructure and trade.
