JEE Advanced Counselling
The JEE or Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) takes place every year for candidates who have cleared the JEE (Main) examination. The JEE Advanced examination is held by any one of the following Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the country which are – IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee.
The difficulty level of the JEE Advanced examination, one of the toughest exams to crack, varies every year. Candidates should prepare every subject well in order to clear the examination. Solving previous years’ question papers is especially important as it makes students familiar with the exam pattern and helps them know their level of preparation. Candidates from all over India, as well as overseas, appear for the JEE Advanced examination to get admission in Engineering, Architecture or Science programmes offered by the IITs. The subjects covered in the exam are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
JEE Advanced Counselling 2022
Candidates who qualify the JEE Advanced have to undergo counselling. They must complete filling a form in which they list their preferred institutes and the course they wish to study. Candidates can indicate their desired course selection for that academic year. During the online selection process, the IITs give a list of courses from which candidates can pick their preferences.
JEE Advanced 2022 Counselling and Seat Allotment by JoSAA
Every year, the JEE Advanced counselling for admission to Bachelor’s and integrated engineering programs at various IITs is completed under the supervision of JoSAA (The Joint Seat Allocation Authority). This authorised organisation also monitors the seat assignment system for admitting eligible students to IITs.
JEE Advanced Counselling 2022 – A Brief Overview
Once a candidate has taken part in this counselling, he or she must maintain a track of the JEE Advanced admission process as well. This is due to the fact that the authorised organisation will not notify an applicant of the institute personally but will update the same through email or SMS.
Available Seats and Programs
All the IITs admit competent students to various Engineering, Architecture or Science programs and also provide specific seats. These seats are allotted for various sorts of programs, which are broadly classified as 4 and 5 year programs, respectively.
The availability of the seats is as followed-
- Seats for 5 years programs
- Seats for 4 years programs
Furthermore, these programs are further subdivided into many engineering streams from which candidates can choose when they enrol for the Advanced JEE counselling. The division is as follows:
- 79 streams for the 5 years course
and
- 166 streams for the 4 years course
Allocation of Seats
The number of available seats are distributed to students from various divisions who pass and enrol in JEE Advanced counselling.
The seat allocation for various categories is as follows-
- General Category Candidates (Not reserved) – 50.5% total seats
- ST Category Candidates – 7.5% total seats
- OBC and NCL Category Candidates – 27% total seats
- SC Category Candidates – 15% of total seats
In addition to this separation, the People with Disabilities have 5% of seats assigned individually.
The Counselling Schedule of JEE Advanced (2022)
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will begin centralised JEE Advanced 2022 counselling and seat assignment on July 19, 2022. JEE Advanced eligible and eligible applicants must register and enrol for their desired course and colleges before the timespan mentioned.

Candidates Eligibility for Participating in the Counselling
Candidates must meet a few eligibility criteria in addition to qualify for the JEE Advanced in order to participate in the JEE Advanced counselling process. They must satisfy the following conditions.
- If a candidate has failed in one or more subjects in his or her qualifying test. Then he or she must take the exam in that year itself and pass it in order to be qualified to participate in the JEE Advanced counselling
- Candidates from the unreserved category must have an aggregate score of at least 75%. It must be at least 65 percent for SC/ST/OBC applicants
- If the authorised board of qualifying exams only gives grades, then the candidates must contact them to get the aggregated marks he/ she has achieved. If a candidate fails to present the aggregate marks, then the JEE Advanced Joint Implementation Committee will make the ultimate decision, which will be final and cannot be appealed
- If a board gives separate scores for classes 11 and 12 for the qualifying test, then the marks that are acquired by a student in class 12 will be taken into consideration. If the scores of the board are an aggregate representation of the marks gained in both tests, then that total mark will be then taken into consideration for the JEE Advanced counselling
All applicants, including foreign nationals, who participate in the JEE Advanced counselling process must satisfy the criteria mentioned.
Counselling Cut Off for JEE Advanced
Candidates who wish to be a part of the 2022 JEE Advanced counselling process must also meet the JEE Advanced counselling cut off. It is the least number of points a student must achieve in order to appear on the NTA’s merit list. This qualifies them to take part in the counselling.
The table below shows the percentage of minimum marks that applicants must acquire in total and per subject depending on the category to which they belong.
Sr No | List of Ranks | Minimum % of marks in individual subjects | Minimum % of aggregated marks |
1 | ST PwD | 5 | 17.5 |
2 | SC PwD | 5 | 17.5 |
3 | OBS PwD | 5 | 17.5 |
4 | CRL PwD | 5 | 17.5 |
5 | SC | 5 | 17.5 |

Candidates should be aware that the CRL is the cut-off criteria for candidates from unreserved categories only.
Recent Changes in JEE Advanced Counselling
An eligible applicant who has already been assigned a seat may now withdraw it during these first six rounds of counselling. They are unable to do so in the seventh and final round of JEE Advanced 2022 seat allocation counselling. This change will now help the governing body in lowering the number of unoccupied seats for all the institutes. By the time the counselling gets over, a large number of students may be admitted to the IITs.
Counselling for JEE Advanced – The Process
The counselling procedure for admission to the IITs in 2022 will start from the 19th July 2022 (tentative), the first round of JEE Advanced seat allotment is yet to be notified. To finish their counselling procedure in any of the seven rounds, participating candidates must go through a few stages. These stages are mentioned below-
Step 1 – Registration
Before the JEE Advanced counselling begins, qualifying applicants must register for participation on the official website. This will then enable the students to receive their id and password, users must submit necessary information such as their JEE Advanced application number, date of birth, roll number, etc. The dates for the registration process is expected to begin on the 19th of July, 2022 that is a tentative date.
Step 2 – Filling & Locking the Choices
Candidates will need to fill out the desired choice of institute, branch, and the course after they are done with the counselling session. This also depends on the round an individual wishes to give the exam in. The students are asked to lock the selections they make in order to make a final decision.
Individuals can add or delete or change the selections they have made till the sixth round before the JEE Advanced counselling session. If they fail to do so by the sixth round, then the selections they have already made will be automatically locked in, and allocation of the seat will be done on that basis. Students are also asked to keep their password and username or id available since it is required to login to the website to fill up the preferences.
Step 3 – Seat Allotment for JEE Advanced
JEE Advanced 2022 seat allocation will be on the basis of the All India Ranking which are obtained by students in the exam and the selections they make. The procedure is performed in accordance with three different types-
- Percentage of Disability they have
- Date of Birth of the Candidate
- The Nationality he/ she belongs to
Candidates must verify their allocation status after each counselling round because seat allocation will not be communicated to them directly and personally. They can do so by accessing JoSAA’s online counselling service on its official website.
Step 4 – Reporting for College Allotment
Once the assignment process of JEE Advanced is done, aspirants must go to the specific Regional IIT branch to advance with his/ her admission procedure. They must be present in person for document verification and payment of entrance fees. The registration fee for general, OBC, SC/ST/PwD candidates will be notified soon.
Two points an individual must keep in mind-
- If any of the documents provided by the candidates are found invalid, then the applicant from the general category will be considered. In addition, he/she will be qualified on the basis of the JEE Advanced Paper 1 score for the general category
- Throughout document verification, an applicant’s duplicate or xerox documents will be compared to their original documents which they presented during the application process. As a result, they must provide original certificates during this allotment procedure
Step 5 – Admission on a Provisional Basis
Finally, the appropriate institute provides a final letter of allocation and accepts candidates once they are satisfied with the procedure of the document verification and fee payment. Admission of applicants who do not meet the eligibility requirements or give inaccurate information is considered to be invalid.
The required document for admission are-
- Letter of seat allotment from their website
- Original admit card of the JEE Advanced examination
- A printed and filled application form
- Report for medical examination
- A foreign national’s photocopy of passport page that has his/her credentials
- Pass certificate & mark sheet of their qualifying exam
