ICSE Class 9 Modern Foreign Language Group 3 Syllabus
The goal of choosing a Modern Foreign Language is to develop an appreciation for the language as a useful communication tool, particularly the spoken language, and to learn about the elements of language.
Candidates who select a Modern Foreign Language in Group II as a second language are not entitled to select the same language in Group III under the Modern Foreign Language category.

ICSE Class 9 Modern Foreign Language Group 3 Syllabus 2023-2024
There will be one written theory paper of a two-hour duration, which carries 100 marks, and an Internal Assessment of 100 marks. The theory paper will consist of 5 questions all of which will be compulsory. For the Internal Assessment, the candidates are required to complete a minimum of five assignments as assigned by the teachers. Students can view the course syllabus below.
Syllabus for Theory Paper:
- Question 1: Candidates are required to write, in the chosen language, one short composition of approximately 250 words that may include directions, short explanations, descriptions or narratives. There will be a choice of subjects which will vary and may be suggested by language or another stimulus such as pictures or objects. (20 Marks)
- Question 2: Candidates are required to write one letter of approximately 150 words from the choice of two subjects. Suggestions may be given. The layout of the letter, with its address, introduction, conclusion, etc., will form part of the assessment. (15 Marks)
- Question 3: One short passage will be there for translation from the language into English. (20 Marks)
- Question 4: A 150 words unseen passage will be asked in the language. Questions in the chosen language shall be set, and it is to be answered in the particular language to test the candidates’ understanding of the context of the passage. (20 Marks)
- Question 5: There will be a number of short questions to test the candidates’ knowledge of proper grammar, structure and usage of the language. (25 Marks)
As an example, marks distribution for Question 5 for the French language shall be as follows:
Tenses : 5 marks

Feminines : 5 marks

Syllabus for Internal Assessment:
The assignments should cover the following areas:
- Creative Writing
- Aural Comprehension

Assignments Suggested
Creative Writing: Students will have to write short compositions, the stimuli being; i) any piece of recorded music; ii) any recorded series of sounds; iii) any picture/photograph; iv) any opening sentence or phrase; v) any newspaper/magazine clipping or report; any one piece of factual writing that should be informative or argumentative; any one piece and expressive writing that is descriptive and imaginative; any preparation of a film/book review.
Oral: a prepared speech/ declamation; any impromptu speech/ debate/ discussion; any report/ interview; elocution; a role-play/ general conversation on any selected topics.
Aural: Listening carefully to a conversation/talk/reading of a short passage, followed by writing down the important or main points in the specified number of words along with answering the given questions.
About ICSE Class 9 Modern Foreign Language Group 3 Syllabus Evaluation
The assignment/project work is required to be evaluated by the specific subject teacher and by an external examiner. The external examiner may possibly be a teacher nominated by the Head of the school, which could be from the existing faculty but not teaching the subject in the class/section. For example, a teacher of Language of Class VIII may be asked to be an External Examiner for Class X Language projects.
The Internal and External Examiner will access the assignments independently.
The total marks obtained out of 100 are required to be sent to the Council by the Head of the School.
The Head of the School will thus be responsible for the appropriate entry of marks on the performance sheets provided by the Council.

1. What is the ICSE Class 9 Modern Foreign Language marking standards?
The Modern Foreign Language curriculum for ICSE class 9 is split into two halves. The two papers for ICSE Class 9 Modern Foreign Language each carry 100 marks, for a total of 200 marks. Paper I is a theory paper that will consist of 5 questions for a total of 100 marks. The second part is Internal Assessment is again of 100 marks which is again divided into two parts of 50 marks each.
