A brief description of ICSE Syllabus Class 10 Modern Foreign Language Group 3:

Examination Theory Paper

It consists of 100 Marks Weightage. This paper consists of five questions, all of which will be compulsory. 

  • Question 1: 

Students will have to write one short composition of approximately 250 words in the language that may have small directions/explanations/descriptions or narratives. There will be an option to select subjects that will be diverse and may be suggested by language or other motifs such as images or objects. (20 Marks). 

  • Question 2: 

Students need to write a letter of 150 words approximately from a choice of two subjects. Suggestions may be given. The format of the letter, with address, introduction, conclusion, etc., will form part of the assessment. (15 Marks)

  • Question 3: 

One small passage will be set for translation from the language into English. (20 Marks) 

  • Question 4: 

An unseen passage of about approximately 150 words will be provided in the language. Questions in the particular language will be answered in the language only, which is structured to test the student’s expertise and understanding of the context of the passage. (20 Marks)

  • Question 5: 

There will be several small answer questions to test the student’s knowledge of functional grammar, design and usage of the language. (25 Marks)

Examination Internal Assessment

It consists of 100 marks, and students are supposed to complete a minimum of five assignments for Class 10 as assigned by the teachers/faculty. The assignments should cover the following areas:

  • Creative writing. 
  • Aural comprehension. 
  • Oral. 
  • Research projects

Suggested Assignments:

  1. Creative Writing: Students are required to write short compositions, the stimuli being: a piece of recorded music; a recorded series of sounds; a picture/photograph; an opening sentence or phrase; a newspaper/magazine clipping; a piece of factual writing which is informative or argumentative; a piece of expressive writing that is both descriptive and imaginative; preparation of a book or a film review. 
  2. Oral: Prepared speech/declamation; impromptu speech/debate/discussion; report/interview; elocution; role-play/general conversation on selected topics. 
  3. Aural: Listening to a conversation/talk/reading of a small passage and then writing down the relevant or primary points in a specified number of words and answering the given questions. 

Marks Weightage for ICSE Syllabus Class 10 Modern Foreign Language Group 3

Students offering a Modern Foreign Language as a Group 2 Module may not opt for the same language as a Group 3 Module Papers will be set in various languages – French (53), Spanish (54), German (55) and other foreign languages on request. 

Marks distribution for Question 5 for the French language shall be as follows:

  • Tenses will have 5 marks 
  • Pronouns will have 5 marks 
  • Plurals will have 5 marks
  • Feminines will have 5 marks
  • Make sentences with given words: 5 marks
