Answer: Dinesh Mukerji was a friend of Bepin Babu. Bipin got to know from Dinesh that he was in Ranchi along with him. 

Bepin called Dinesh to know if he had visited the city during the said period. Later, Bepin asked Dinesh if he remembered anything about the ’58 incident, whether he was in Calcutta or not. However, Dinesh told him to wait for a while, and he checked its record in his diary. Then Dinesh replied to Bepin that he was in Calcutta in February to participate in his nephew’s wedding. Dinesh also elaborated that there was a trip to Ranchi, and Bepin was there too.

Answer: Babu becomes restless after hearing from Dinesh. He slammed down the receiver and firmly gripped his head with his hands. Babu had no idea what was going on and he felt tired: his head was wobbly. He felt a chill all over his spine and body, the situation worsened, and he lost his appetite. He didn’t eat anything on that day. It happened to him for the first time in twenty-five years of working. 

Question 3. Write a summary of the poem “The Last Bargain”. 

Answer: The poem, The Last Bargain is about the struggle of finding a job. Rabindranath Tagore wrote the poem. He mentioned that the person wishes to be hired without losing his freedom. This poem is about the daily wager who wishes to be hired. 

A king offers the man a job, but he rejects it. An older man came with gold coins, but he denied that proposal too. Further, a lady offers the daily wager a job, and he also refuses that too. 

Question 4. Did Bepin Babu follow the physicians’ advice?

Answer: Yes, Bepin Babu follows the physician’s advice and takes a train to Ranchi. When he reaches Ranchi, as soon as he sets his foot on the platform, he elaborates that it is his first visit to that city. There he hires a taxi and drives around the city for a while. He sees the buildings, the streets, the market, the hostel, and Morabadi Hill, but nothing comes to his mind from the previous visit. Everything seems new to him. Then he decides to visit Hudroo Falls, hoping it may help him remember. But he still has many doubts about his visit. 

Question 5. What happens when Bepin goes to Hundru falls?

Answer: Around five o’clock in the afternoon, two men found Bepin lying on the ground. He lost his conscious state beside a boulder. After he gains consciousness, he thinks there is no hope left for him Later, he returned to Calcutta the following day and was very upset that he may have lost his memories. Afterwards, he called his doctor and asked him to make a house visit.

Answer. The onlooker claimed he had been in contact with Bepin since he visited Ranchi in 1958. Though Bepin Babu is dismissive of his claims, however, the onlooker puts forward a lot of things which are personal to Bepin to prove his point. In addition, he claimed that he had arranged a car for Bepin to visit the Hundru falls. He helped Bepin to check his medical needs after he fell at the Hundru falls. Bepin also seems to have in-store personal details, such as information that his wife had died ten years back. His only brother had been a victim of insanity.

Question 7. What were Chunilal’s reactions when he asked Bepin about having gone to Ranchi?

Answer: Chunilal asked Bepin if he had been on drugs or something. To this, Bepin replied that as far as he knows, Bepin has a clean record of drug and alcohol consumption. In addition, his health was in a good state, and he is physically fine. He questioned how he had forgotten about the Ranchi trip. Chunilal was amazed and worried to know that Bepin had forgotten everything about the trip.

Answer: Bepin could not remember anything about the Ranchi trip, so Chuni got worried. To check his memory, he asked Bepin if he remembered his previous job. Chuni had done Bepin’s railway ticket booking for Ranchi and had also dropped him off at the station. So Chuni was trying to see if Bepin remembers anything about his previous job as he doesn’t remember about the Ranchi trip.

Answer: Paresh Chanda was a physician who had bright eyes and a sharp nose. Further, Bepin told him about his situation and mental illness and asked him to cure this illness. He later elaborated on how it affected his work.

Answer: The physician was very surprised to see that he had never dealt with such an illness before. In addition, he asked Bepin to follow and try to recall his work.
