Answer 12. The understorey is the layer of trees and plants that grows beneath the main canopy of the forest. The differences in size, shape and height of the crowns of different trees and plants create different understories.

Answer 13. Plants act as a natural rainwater absorber and permit water to seep slowly to rejuvenate groundwater. This is how forests help prevent floods.

Question 14. How do forests balance the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?

Answer 14. The green leaves of the trees take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and emit oxygen. This oxygen is necessary for animal respiration. In forests, many trees can be found on a small land. As an outcome, more water is absorbed by the soil and delivered to the atmosphere. As a result, rainfall increases. This results in more water seeping into the forest floor and soil, raising groundwater levels.
