About Class 7 Chapter 12 Algebraic Expression
Variables and constants are the building blocks of algebraic expressions. Expressions are created by applying addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations to the variables and constants.
There are different types of algebraic expressions.
- A polynomial is any expression with one or more terms.
- An expression with one term is referred to as a monomial.
- An expression with two terms is referred to as a binomial.
- An expression with three terms is referred to as a trinomial.
Addition And Subtraction Of Algebraic Expressions:
- While adding like terms together, the result is equal to the sum of all the coefficients of like terms.
For example: 2xy + 3 xy = (2+3) xy = 5xy
- When like terms are subtracted, the result is equal to the deduction or difference of all the coefficients of like terms.
For example: 2xy – 3xy = (2-3)xy = -xy
- Like the like terms, we cannot subtract or add, terms.
- On either subtracting or adding two algebraic expressions, the, unlike terms, remain as it is while the like terms are put together. Thereafter, the required operation is performed.
For example: If you add two expressions i.e.
(6X+26+18xy) and (10xy-16z-4x), then it will be:
(6X+26+18xy) + (10xy-16z-4x)
= (18+10)xy + (6-4)x + 26 – 16z
= 28xy+2x-16z+26
