Revision Notes Class 10 Mathematics Chapter 14: Introduction to Statistics
Chapter 14: Introduction to Statistics is an important chapter in Class 10 Mathematics. The chapter comprises several sub-topics such as mean, median, mode, etc… There are several formulas, numerical concepts, etc that need to be revised by students regularly. Thus, Extramarks has provided a complete list of revision notes on its official website which can be easily referred to and accessed by students. These notes have been developed in a detailed manner. Students can regularly study these notes and prepare well for examinations.
Statistics
Statistics is regarded as the analysis or study of various collections, interpretations, presentations, and data organization. If put in simpler words, statistics is a discipline of mathematics that is efficiently applied for collecting and summarising data.
Mean of grouped data
Mean is known as a measure of central tendency. It is the average value of a set of given observations. The three methods that are commonly used to find the mean of grouped data are-
- Direct Method:
x¯¯¯=∑i=1nfixi/∑i=1nfi,
Where x¯¯¯ is known as the mean,
f is known as the frequency,
X is known as the mid-interval.
- Assumed Mean Method:
x¯¯¯=A+∑i=1nfidi/∑i=1nfi
Here, A stands for assumed mean, and d is x−A.
- Step Deviation Method:
x¯¯¯=A+h×∑i=1nfiti/∑i=1nfi
Where h stands for class size, and t is DH.
A Quick Overview of Class 10 Mathematics Chapter 14
Class 10 Mathematics Chapter 14 is titled Introduction to Statistics. This chapter explains statistics as well as different sub-concepts such as mean, median, mode, grouped data, ungrouped data, etc. After referring to these concepts, students can even revise them by accessing the revision notes on the Extramarks website. They will also learn about the basic concepts of cumulative frequency, cumulative frequency distribution and the technique to draw the cumulative frequency, etc.
Mean of Grouped Data
The mean of any observation is defined as the sum of all the given values divided by the total number of observations. If the observations are y₁,y₂, y₃, y₄…yₙ with the respective frequencies f1, f2, f3, f4, …., fn, the mean of the y of the given data will be-
y¯ = f1y1, f2y2, f3y3, f4y4, +…..+ yn/f1, f2, f3, f4,….fn
Mode of Grouped Data
The mode of grouped data is defined as one of the values among the observations, which is set to occur with the highest frequency. To put it in simpler words, it is further called the value of the observation with the maximum frequency.
Median of Grouped Data
If n is even, then the median is defined as the average of the median and is regarded as the measure of central tendency known to obtain the value of the middle observation in the data.
If n is odd, the median will be (n+1/2) the term of the observations.
However, if n is even, the median will be the average of the (n/2)th and the (n+1/2) term of the observations.
Cumulative Frequency
The cumulative frequency of any class is defined as the frequency achieved by adding the frequencies belonging to every class above the given type.
