Happy New Year from Team Extramarks! With the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board exams 2024 on the horizon, it's time for schools to gear up for the upcoming exam season. Our first newsletter of the year covers the major reforms in CBSE board exams that schools and students can expect starting this year. CBSE ushers in transformative changes in terms of examination structure, marking scheme, question formats and even calculation of results. These revised changes have been designed to align with the directives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Schools and teachers hold a crucial responsibility of helping students elevate their exam readiness following these revised changes.
The CBSE board examination for Class 10 is set to take place between February 15, 2024 and March 13, while the exams for Class 12 will start on February 15, 2024 and conclude by April 2, 2024. Vocational subject examinations are scheduled from February 15 to February 18, while the board exams will begin February 19, 2024 onward.
Let’s dive into the main changes in CBSE board exams and their implications for both schools and students. |

The new guidelines for CBSE board exams align with the Ministry of Education’s latest plan that introduces a fresh approach to evaluation, facilitates comprehensive student development and offers better prospects for academic achievements.
To shape your school’s readiness for the upcoming board exams, explore the 5 modifications introduced by CBSE: |
-
Optional Biannual Board Examination
From the 2024 academic session onward, students will have the option to appear for board exams twice a year, allowing them to enhance their preparation and preserve their top scores. This alleviates the pressure typically linked with the competitive nature of board exams. Additionally, students will experience enhanced flexibility in subject choices, free from stream limitations and are required to study two languages, with at least one being an Indian language.
-
Special Provisions for National/International Sports and Olympiads Participants
CBSE will conduct special exams for students of Class 10 & 12 participating in sports or International Olympiads during board exams. However, this arrangement will not give students separate opportunities to appear for compartment or practical exams.
-
No Printed Tables in the Answer Book for Accountancy Subjects
CBSE announced the elimination of printed tables from Accountancy booklets, streamlining them with answer books with normal lines as provided in other subjects. The decision stemmed from feedback gathered from various CBSE stakeholders.
-
More Competency-Based Questions
Based on the newly-revised assessment scheme recently introduced by CBSE, the board examination paper for Class 10 will allocate 50% of marks to competency-focused MCQs, case-based and source-based integrated questions whereas for Class 12, competency-based questions will account for 40% of the total marks.
-
No Division, Distinction or Overall Scores in Results
CBSE has decided not to assign overall divisions, distinctions or aggregates in Class 10 and Class 12 board exams. The practice of subject-wise marking remains; however, determining the top five subject scores may be at the discretion of the admitting institution or employer.
Embracing these modifications by CBSE will support schools in refining learning strategies and strengthen their students’ board exam preparation effectively.
